Yesterday, Congo had its first election in 46 years. Millions turned out and there wasn't much violence. This is nothing short of amazing. The Congo has been the most consistently lawless country in Africa, and hence, the world, for nearly half a century. Its huge - in the middle of sub-Saharan Africa - and bordering something like 12 countries, including, most notably, Rwanda (genocide), Sudan (civil war/genocide), Angola (limbs for diamonds), and Kenya (rampant corruption, even for Africa). Needless to say, the borders are very porous, with numerous militias fighting over mineral wealth and ethnicity, provoking violence in a number of countries. (Many of the people responsible for the Rwandan genocide now live in Congo). Moreover, all of its leaders have been ruthless, and in quintessential African form, have taken their country's immense wealth for themselves, placing billions in offshore bank accounts.

I got a crazy idea last night and I'd love some feedback. Most people are saying that if the Democrats win, it will be because the Republicans stayed home. Rather than Clinton triangulation, recent history has shown that the most enthused party wins. Democrats are notorious for not getting people to the polls. Republicans got people to the polls in 04 by using defense-of-marriage ballot initiatives.

I am so angry at Harry Reid, Chuck Schumer and company. I don't think even George Bush has insulted my intelligence like they did last night. In case you haven't heard, they're railing against the Prime Minister of Iraq, saying he "shouldn't be allowed to address Congress," since he condemned Israel's attacks on civilians, without condemning Hezbollah. Never mind that none of these wannabe neo-cons gave balanced comments either. They never once mentioned the Lebanese civilians, or the fact that Isreal's response just might be a wee bit disproportionate.

Recently, while debating the Iraq War, it occurred to me that I had begun to revel in bad news. I was happy to hear that things were going bad in Iraq, because I was so filled with disgust at Bush & Co., that I wanted his poll numbers to stay down. Just like a politician, at some point, I had lost focus on the solution to the problems, instead opting to vent my rage, get my revenge, say "I told you so," and win the next election. With that attitude, I had no right to become indignant when some chickenhawk called me unpatriotic. When you're against a war upon which your antagonist has gambled his legacy and the success of his party, its easy to be unpatriotic. Its easy to hope that things keep going bad. But it IS unpatriotic. Just because Bush framed the debate that way, doesn't make it any less so.
