I got a crazy idea last night and I'd love some feedback. Most people are saying that if the Democrats win, it will be because the Republicans stayed home. Rather than Clinton triangulation, recent history has shown that the most enthused party wins. Democrats are notorious for not getting people to the polls. Republicans got people to the polls in 04 by using defense-of-marriage ballot initiatives.
So, what's a hot-button issue that exposes a weak point in the conservative Coalition? There are a few. How about stem cell research, Iraq, or Separation of Powers issues. Why can't state Democratic parties introduce ballot initiatives on these issues, to rally the troops?
Example: A proposition to amend the Virginia Constitution, to include a provision requiring that stem cells, which are derived from biological material that will otherwise be discarded, shall be preserved for scientific research.
OR, if possible, even something without teeth, like:
A resolution in support of immediate withdrawal of all troops from Iraq.
Anyone know if there are any ballot-initiatives already cooking, that are likely to galvanize the left, and bring people to the polls?
